Argolida
The Argolida county is famous
all over the world for its history and for the archaeological sites of
Mycenae and Ancient Theatre of Epidavros. These wonderful
historic monuments have stood for 2000+ years and are a joy to visit at
any time of the year along with the Temple of Asclepios and
pretty seaside village of New Epidavros. At Mycenae the Lion's
Gate and the beehive Tomb of Agamemnon are huge attractions
to visitors from all over the world.
The site of Ancient Tiryns is a
world heritage site just outside of Nafplion which shows us
excellent examples of Cyclopean walls, catacombs and drainage systems, a
fascinating site for all to see and just 15 mins away from Tolo. During
the same era as Mycenae and Tiryns, Ancient Asini, which is just
literally a few hundred metres from the Esperia Hotel, acted as
the port for the Mycenaean community as Homer reminds us in his books
the Iliad and the Odyssey.
Nafplion, 10 minutes away by
bus or by car, was the first capital of Greece when it was liberated
from the Turks. It is full of historical monuments and architecture from
the various different occupying forces over the years. There are narrow
streets with overhanging balconies of Venetian style, lined with shops
and cafeterias, statues of heroes who have come from o fought for the
liberation of Greece. Visit one of the museums, the Archaeological
Museum in the main square, the Folklore Museum and the Military Museum.
There are a number of fortresses in Nafplion, the Palamidi
towering over the whole city, the Acronafplia and the Bourtzi,
the island situated in the harbour. Nafplion is a cosmopolitan town that
has a magical quality, a great nightlife and a must during visit
to the area. |
